The Equine-Assisted Services Industry

 

​​Many different names have been used for learning experiences based on the horse-human connection, some of them are:
Equine Assisted Learning, Equine Experiential Education/Learning, Equine Facilitated Experiential Learning, Facilitated Equine Experiential Learning, Equine Facilitated Learning, Equine Facilitated Wellness, Equine Facilitated Interactions, Equine Assisted Interactions, Equine Assisted Activities, Animal Assisted Activities, Horse Assisted Education/Learning, ​Equine Guided Learning/Education, Equine Guided Interactions, Equine Assisted Coaching, Equine Guided Coaching, Equine Facilitated Coaching​

A related field of psychotherapy/counseling with horses has been referred to by many names and here are a few:
Equine Assisted Psychotherapy, Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy, Equine Guided Psychotherapy, Equine Therapy, Equine Assisted Counseling, Horse Assisted Therapy, Animal Assisted Therapy & Therapy with Horses

Therapeutic Riding has been referred to as:
Hippotherapy, Equine Assisted Therapy, Equine Therapy, Horse Assisted Therapy, etc.

In 2020, the Equine-Assisted Services industry aligned terminology for services with horses in the areas of learning, psychotherapy, therapeutic riding, and horsemanship. You can learn more here. The new terminology supports our industry with common language, although clients of these services will continue to have difficulty connecting with the industry terminology. When describing, promoting, and selling your equine programs and services to prospective clients, we highly recommend simple language that is easy for prospects to understand, i.e., "learning with horses" rather than "equine assisted learning."
