EAL Academy is Different
A few important aspects to consider when comparing EAL Academy with other trainings

  1. Our goal is to be simple, straightforward, and of the highest quality, so we purposely offer "one and done" training experiences, with no future financial investment. We train in small groups so everyone participates and receives personal coaching. We provide future support for your EAL program by answering your questions, providing consultation before and after the training, and connecting you with our community of past trainees where we all share our knowledge and experience to support each other.
  2. We offer accelerated and experiential trainings where you're prepared to facilitate and coach EAL programs immediately after attending the course. There's pre-work to complete prior to each training. By studying materials ahead of time, there’s more time to spend learning with the horses and for discussion to cover the important core topics such as marketing, pricing business practices, safety, necessary resources, activity design, program design, etc.
  3. We partner with horses through ground activities (no riding) with horses on leads or at liberty. The coaching model of facilitation focuses on the horse-human connection, where the horses' feedback and wisdom are the heart of the learning experience. In addition to facilitating group EAL experiences, we also train on somatic awareness and deep one-on-one experiences with horses. These are unforgettable experiences of connection that you will learn to facilitate with your clients.
  4. We provide extensive training materials that include step-by-step processes plus a library of forms, templates, tools, and samples, designed by EAL Academy and based on our best practices from 20+ years of experience providing EAL client programs and 15+ years of experience training others to facilitate EAL. Prior attendees refer to these tools as a "business in a box" which enables starting right after the training by simply adding your branding.
  5. Obtaining certification status is straight forward. We offer a knowledge based Certification that is issued from EAL Academy based on our in-depth experience with EAL since 2003 and providing high quality EAL training and certification since 2007. We provide lifetime certification that doesn't require future investments for membership or continuing education to maintain your certification status. You choose when you want to invest in continuing education and our goal is to earn your future education investments. Regarding accreditation, intentionally we are not governed or accredited by another organization. If accreditation is important to you, then consider our trainings as experiences for facilitation skill development and access to unique EAL offerings. There's low financial risk with the short term investment of attending our trainings, and training expenses can be quickly recovered by holding a few programs with paying clients following the methods we teach.
  6. Our strength is high quality EAL trainings with advanced content through sharing our best practices. We share everything we know and have learned through our experience. We're transparent and we don't hold back any secrets. We want you to be successful so more people can learn and grow through meaningful experiences with horses. 99.9% of our prior training attendees say they would recommend our trainings to others and they have collectively rated our trainings at 98.6%.
  7. Building and running any business is challenging. EAL businesses require the same knowledge, skills, time, and financial investment as any other business. We'll support you on the EAL aspects of your business, including marketing and pricing. We offer these other resources. We highly recommend seeking local resources to build your general business skills and to find service providers that have needed expertise for your location.

Yes, our EAL Facilitator Model is Different

  • Prior Experience: We welcome all adults to attend our trainings, and we don't require professional qualifications or a degree. Other professional experience can be valuable when working with clients and building your program.
  • Non-Therapeutic Model: Our approach is educational rather than therapeutic, utilizing an experiential coaching model of facilitation. During our EAL Facilitator Certification training we cover the professional importance of staying within the learning context and we teach techniques to do so. Specifically, our model does not require a licensed mental health professional as member of the EAL facilitation team. If you're a professional with the necessary therapeutic credentials, all the techniques and horse activities we teach can be adapted for a therapeutic setting.
  • Facilitation Team: We recommend 2 or more human facilitators for the most effective client experience and to adequately manage safety for group programs. It's best for all facilitators to understand horses and possess strong facilitation skills. Horses are equal co-facilitators. We partner with horses as sentient beings to receive their wisdom and, when needed, we translate their feedback for clients. Horse consent and wellbeing, along with physical, emotional and energetic safety of horses and people are the most important priority.
  • Voice and Values: We believe your best EAL program is built based on your voice and values, including your approach to horsemanship. We believe the best facilitation and coaching experiences happen when you are authentic and integrate your passions. During our trainings, we'll review how to bring your voice and values to your EAL program.

A related field of psychotherapy/counseling with horses has been referred to by many names and here are a few:
Equine Assisted Psychotherapy, Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy, Equine Guided Psychotherapy, Equine Therapy, Equine Assisted Counseling, Horse Assisted Therapy, Animal Assisted Therapy & Therapy with Horses
Therapeutic Riding has been referred to as:
Hippotherapy, Equine Assisted Therapy, Equine Therapy, Horse Assisted Therapy, etc.
In 2020, the Equine-Assisted Services industry aligned terminology for services with horses in the areas of learning, psychotherapy, therapeutic riding, and horsemanship. You can learn more here. The new terminology supports our industry with common language, although clients of these services will continue to have difficulty connecting with the industry terminology. When describing, promoting, and selling your equine programs and services to prospective clients, we highly recommend simple language that is easy for prospects to understand, i.e., "learning with horses" rather than "equine assisted learning."

Are you a therapist looking to grow your business by offering learning programs with horses?

Many therapists are looking to expand into learning programs because of the stronger financial model and income potential. Plus, many therapists find facilitating learning programs to be very rewarding. Although we use a non-therapeutic coaching model of facilitation, two of our founders are therapists and we can help you add learning programs.

"Horses typically live in the present moment; to be a great EAL facilitator we need to join them there and be courageously authentic.”
